BE AVALANCHE AWARE!!!

Carry the right equipment - watch avalanche forecasts - one at a time on a slope - stay aware of your surroundings - never ride alone.

Avalanche awareness saves lives!!!

The following avalanche warning has been issued for the Steamboat Springs/Flattops, Front Range, Vail/Summit County, Sawatch Range, Aspen, Gunnison and Northern San Juan Zones

Several factors have combined to push the avalanche danger to HIGH (Level 4):  1) We have a very weak snowpack structure, 2)  0.5 to 0.75 inches of snow water equivalent fell overnight, 3) the new snowfall arrived with strong west to northwest winds, and 4) this new load all came in a less than 12-hour window. Natural avalanches are likely today and human-triggered slides are very likely. Backcountry travel on or below slopes 30 degrees or steeper is not recommended today.

 WELCOME!!

The Colorado Snowmobile Association was founded in 1970 as an opportunity to unite winter motorized recreationists across the state to enjoy their passion.  It has continued the tradition of family and fun for the last almost 40 years.  The association has also become the voice of organized snowmobiling to advance, promote and preserve the sport of snowmobiling through work with Federal and state land management agencies and local, state and federal legislators telling the truth about our sport.

NEW THIS WEEK

AVALANCHES HAVE KILLED 3 THIS WEEKEND

Three different avalanche accidents have claimed the lives of two skiers, one near Vail and the other near Winter Park, and one snowmobiler near Steamboat Springs.   Here is a link to the most recent story in the Steamboat Pilot  regarding the two brothers caught in an avalanche on Buffalo Pass, unfortunately only one made it out alive.  One is one too many and to make the point of how quickly and how randomly these things happen in conditions we are experience right now here is a link to a video taken on Cameron Pass, not a likely avalanche zone.  Please be careful, take proper precautions, wait and give the snow a chance to settle, it literally could mean staying alive to ride another day.

THE FUTURE OF RTP REMAINS BLEAK

A Senate Committee has approved transportation reauthorization legislation that effective strips the Recreational Trail Program (RTP) of its dedicated funding, dooming this program into non-existence.  RTP Funds make up over 20% of the Colorado State Snowmobile Program grooming funding.  The Coalition for Recreational Trails aren't giving up and continue to work with the Senate to emphasize the extreme importance of this user funded program on motorized and even non-motorized trails across the US.  Read more about their efforts and what you can do to help as well.  This is a very important piece of legislation that will dictate how many and how often trails are groomed in Colorado.

KUDOS TO SOME OF OUR OWN

Members of the Routt Powder Riders helped to rescue a lost and injured horse from the back country.  Read more about it in this local newspaper article.  Great work!
